What is infertility ? What Is Ayurveda's Perspective regarding infertility ?
Infertility when a couple has regular, unprotected sex for a year or more in an attempt to conceive, but the woman is not becoming pregnant. It simply indicates that they are experiencing difficulties conceiving naturally. Infertility, which it refers to as "Vandhyatva," is viewed by Ayurveda as much more than a medical issue. It holds that everything in your body and mind must be in harmony for you to become pregnant.
For Ayurveda, the cause of this, is much deeper and expansive than just the symptoms. Infertility is the indication of underlying imbalances in the body’s doshas, namely Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The entire process of conception is known as Garbhasambhavsamagri. Here, Garbha refers to the embryo/fetus i.e. the body that is being formed, Smabhav denotes the process of embryo formation and Samagri talks about the essential components of conception. Ayurvedic practices, since ancient times, acknowledge this conception as a sacred union of four elements, four seeds, namely: Ritu, Kshetra, Ambu, and Bija. The harmonious convergence of these are essential for a healthy Garbha (conception).
- Ritu i.e. Cycle: The twelve days starting from complete stoppage of menstruation. Modern science stipulation stipulates that ovulation may occur fourteen days after menstruation starts. A woman's body produces cervical mucus for a few days every month, typically 10 to 18 days after the start of her period. The man's sperm can swim up and meet the egg much more easily thanks to the superhighway-like effect of this cervical mucus.A couple can communicate if they can determine the precise time of this fertile period (also known as the "fertile window") by monitoring her cycle. Their chances of getting pregnant are significantly increased by this. This aspect of the body that is healthy, nurturing, and fertile is associated with a concept known as Kapha dosha in Ayurveda. Stability, proper lubrication, and healthy growth are the main goals of kapha. Therefore, the key to creating the ideal, inviting environment for a baby to begin growing is having a balanced Kapha.
- Kshetra i.e. Field: Successful conception of Garbha depends on whether the Kshetra i.e. the uterus is healthy or disease free. If any disorder occurs in uterus, the strength of the conception is lost. Therefore, just like a physical field, the Kshetra of conceiving should be well-prepared and healthy. A balanced diet of Ojas-building foods such as milk, ghee and regular exercise or Yoga will prepare uterus for conception.
- Ambu i.e. Nourishment: The term Ambu is tied to the Rasa Dhatu, which is formed after complete digestion of food. The main function of this dhatu is Preenana, which means nourishment. Analogous to how water nourishes life, if the process of Garbha does not get proper and required nourishment, it could lead to miscarriage. It is advised for both partners to consume a balanced daily food regimes as suggested by Ayurveda to strengthen the Shukra i.e. sperm and Artava i.e. ovum.
- Bija i.e. Seed: The final element, Bija required the Shuddha Shukra i.e. the Sperm and Semen and the Shuddha Artava i.e. the Ovum to be strong and healthy, since they are crucial for a successful Garbha, much like how the seeds should be healthy before harvesting. "Shuddha Shukra" (healthy sperm) and "Shuddha Artava" (healthy ovum/egg) are produced by Ayurvedic treatments like Panchakarma (a detox therapy) and particular medications like rasayana medicines and Vajikarana medicines. According to Ayurveda, difficulties conceiving aren't always physical. A couple's ability to conceive may also be significantly impacted by factors like stress, anxiety, and emotional distress. Our Ayurvedic approach is so comprehensive because of this. In order to help you naturally become fertile again, we examine your body, mind, and way of life.
Causes of Infertility According to Ayurveda :
It attributes various causes to this concern, causes which usually come as a bundle, acting in tandem with each other to create obstructions in the reproductive system. Factors like season, diet, blockages etc play a huge role, even if they aren’t obvious at first glance.
To elaborate, Ritu kal is a period where Kapha and Pitta doshas are predominant as a virtue. if Ritu kala is influenced by Vata Pitta doshas, it can result into infertility. Any blockages in follopian tubes, uterus abnormalities also contribute to infertility. Dietary deficiencies of vitamins and minerals lays an underlying ground as well. An imbalance of doshas is what leads to infertility, especially that of the Vata dosha, causes like overexertion, erratic lifestyles, chronic stress also become suspect. An aggravation of the Vata dosha leads to improper menstrual cycles in the form of abnormal movement of reproductive fluids and irregular ovulation. An aggravated Pitta dosha leads to the development of more than normal heat in one’s body, which leads to inflammation of the reproductive organs as well as a strong hormonal imbalance that consequently also affects the quality of the ovum or the sperm. An imbalanced Kapha dosha leads to high levels of mucus production and increases blockages in the reproductive system, creating conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or obesity-related infertility. In fact, apart from all of this, any mental, emotional or psychological disturbances, inclusive of but not limited to, anxiety depression and chronic stress, contribute majorly to a hormonal disbalance which interferes with a natural and healthy conception.
Shukra dhatu is one of the body's seven essential tissues. It's formed from fatty marrow and originates from sweet tastes, consisting of five basic elements (fire, air, water, earth, ether). It's mild in nature and promotes courage, youth, strength, happiness, and helps in reproduction.
A healthy amount of shukra is half an Anjali (a traditional measure). Its normal characteristics are being clear (like alum), liquid, viscous, sweet, and honey-scented.
Eight types of shukra imbalances (shukradusti) are described ina ayurveda , including those related to vata, pitta, and kapha doshas.
A man's sperm or semen may suffer if his Vata and Pitta doshas are out of balance. "Ksheena shukra," "shukradushti," or simply "a lack of sperm" , "reduced sperm motility” and “abnormal sperm morphology” can result from this. The whole-body approach is used in Ayurvedic treatment for "Shukra Dushti" and "Ksheena Shukra."By balancing the responsible doshas, eliminating the responsible toxins, and nourishing the Shukra dhatu, it seeks to correct.
